‘don luis a. ferré’

there were paintings

and no poems in his name

the young artists painted albizu,

he started thinking of his grave,

don luis a. Ferré fell asleep,

a vision came his way:

instead of state senator of u.s.a.,

why not governor of an independent state,

of a puerto rican-japanese state,

methodologies and third world training,

protecting the interests of the u.s.a,

teaching english and spanish,

to african and latin american states,

plenty of money and military bases,

and a faithful ally of the western world.

there were no paintings

and no poems in his name,

the young artists painted albizu,

he started thinking of his grave,

don luis a. ferré fell asleep

a vision came his way:

why not the patriot ferré?

he could move the new progressive party,

to major cities of the u.s.a.,

and still be elected u.s. Senator in florida

and eat crumbs to ways,

in puerto rico and in the u.s.a.

puerto rico, independence yes,

estadistas still in power, yes,

all his enemies will pay tribute,

at least for that one day,

his memoirs will be published,

he will be quoted on the front page

of the n.y. times,

‘it took me, the capitalist ferré,

to complete what the pragmatist muñoz

and the revolutionary albizu

had started long ago.’

don luis a. ferré awoke,

he was highly perplexed,

one of his dreams had said, ‘yes.’

-Luis A. Ferré
