I turned on the televised hearings of media mogul Rupert Murdoch being questioned by Members of Parliament in London at top volume to drown out the coqu\u00eds, who seem to have built an evangelical church down the street from my house. I found myself hanging around a lot of lawyers who were very passionate about what they were doing. They were very busy filing lawsuits and claiming damages, and they were always careful to set the stage for the big hammer they were about to drop. It was great writing technique. The sections all had numbers, and as the numbers increased, so did the dramatic tension of the story. After reading through about five of these lawsuits I felt kind of shell-shocked. At lunch one day, one of the lawyers looked me right in the eye and made me very nervous when, after a pregnant pause he said, ‘In constitutional law, we call that a chilling effect.’<\/p>\n
