Statehood Wins Plebiscite with Lowest Participation in History
With a 22.99% participation rate, Statehood obtained 502,616 votes in the Plebiscite for the Immediate Decolonization of Puerto Rico, becoming the victor with 99.48% of the total vote.
So far, the State Elections Commission (CEE, by its Spanish acronym) has tallied 518,199 ballots, with 502,616 (97.18%) cast for Statehood, 7,779 (1.50%) for Free Association/Independence, and 6,821 (1.32%) for the Current Territorial Status.
The participation rate places Sunday's event last place in the history of plebiscites conducted in the island, and just next-to-last place for all local electoral events—the 2005 Unicameralism Referendum being the one with the lowest participation, at 22.6%. However, the event in 2005 obtained more total votes (553,955).
The 518,199 ballots cast for Statehood set a contrast with the 660,510 obtained seven months ago in the general election by Governor Ricardo Rosselló, who promoted the plebiscite and the Statehood option.
Historically, statehood has obtained 39 to 61% of the vote in the plebiscites where other local political groups have been included. However, it obtained 97% on Sunday, in an event where no other political group participated, opting instead to call for a boycott.
CEE Chairman Liza García stated that, up to today, the expenses associated with the electoral event add up to $7 million, which places the cost per cast vote at $13.50.
